Labor Day Lies

Reposted from last year.  Still on the mark.

*****

Labor Day marks the end of lots of things – summer is over, no more backyard barbeques, swimming pools close, and you have to put away your white shoes.  What the holiday also marks is a declining free market and fair labor practices in America.

“Labor Day is an occasion upon which highly paid union men have the day off to do some shopping at retail stores staffed almost exclusively by non-union workers (if you’re in retail, you’re working on Labor Day), to have cookouts in backyards maintained by non-union (and often illegal) workers, and to otherwise enjoy the delectable fruits of hypocrisy.”, Red Monday

Why we have this love affair with a Canadian-born, crypto-Communist holiday that would more appropriately be held on May 1st is beyond me.  Everyone likes a day off, but why should we honor union bosses that have betrayed their members by being bought off in Obama’s race for socialized medicine.  Why do we perpetuate the myth that Democrats care about the welfare of the American people when their agenda is all about maintaining control by buying off constituencies or enslaving them to the welfare plantation?  You mean to tell me that refusing black children vouchers that allow them to escape failed government schools and have a hope of a better life celebrates the spirit of hope and opportunity that this nation was founded on?

Bull!

Forget celebrating big labor and their union thugs.  Forget about celebrating the “failed everywhere it’s been tried” socialist ideas and programs of the Democrats.  Forget the politics of racial division and identity.

Instead, let’s celebrate freedom.  Let’s celebrate the courage of the American entrepreneur.  Let’s take a day and celebrate the hope of a better life for everyone through equal opportunity, equal access, and equal freedom.

For more on the history of Labor Day, what it celebrates, and it fails to represent the ideals and aspirations of a freedom loving American people, check out “Red Monday” By Kevin D. Williamson at National Review Online.

Refurendum on Obama?

When Governor Scott Walker demanded last year that public sector union members in his state actually pay for a fraction of the “benefits” that the rest of the working world pays dearly for (if they still have jobs), it was decried as inhuman, fascist, immoral, and even fattening.  Liberals, socialists, commies, and union thugs from across the country descended on the Wisconsin statehouse.  They threatened lawmakers and their families.  They blocked access to the capital for people who had actual business to conduct.  They spirited away Democrat legislators so that there could be no quorum allowing a vote.  They gave extra credit to students that skipped classes to join the protests.

Despite all of these machinations intended to intimidate lawmakers instead of changing minds with say… an intelligent argument, Governor Walker signed a bill that weakened the stranglehold of unions on state and local governments.  Despite all the hand wringing and gnashing of teeth, Wisconsin teachers kept their jobs, kept their benefits, governments were able to trim away the massive deficits they were facing, and unions could no longer force workers o join and pay dues to organizations whose policies they objected to.

So, the full force of unionized labor, millions upon millions of dollars, and the support of lefty activists and Occupiers from around the world turned to Wisconsin last year.  They would recall the evil Governor Walker and replace him with the Democrat mayor of one of the worst performing cities in America – Tom Baker of Milwaukee.  With this massive unity of effort combined with the “magic” support of President Obama, surely victory would be theirs.  Surely the liberal/socialist/union alliance could overwhelm the wretched Republican, his Lieutenant Governor, and the cabal of legislators that passed these draconian measures.

But, that is not the case.  Seeing the writing on the wall last week, the President avoided campaigning in Wisconsin, skipping over it even when visiting Minnesota and Illinois.  The White house press secretary has been playing down the results as a purely local event with no impact on the national political scene.  Even DNC Chair Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) changed her tune from the recall being the stepping stone to democrat supremacy and a Obama victory this November to “Wisconsin?  Is that in Canada somewhere?  Cheese, right?”.

So in the final hours, national democrats abandoned once again what they saw as another sinking ship.  They couldn’t afford to be seen backing another loser after the President himself nearly lost in democrat primaries to a convicted felon and even undecided.  The media message machine now turns its gaze away to the substantive issues of the Presidential race as it continues to gain steam.  What’s Snookie up to now?

Just as a reminder… Walker won the recall contest by 9 percent when mainstream media had the polling at a 3% lead going into the election.  In the 2008 election the skew was again 6 points wide.  Does this mean that the 7% lead Obama showed in last night’s exit polling might be similarly skewed?  Might that mean that Mitt Romney is within the margin of error in blue Wisconsin? Hmmm…

Here is a glimpse of what the left was able to muster in the final hours to reinforce their “Maginot line” in the Wisconsin recall.

I guess he’ll just head back to his tent at Occupy Wall Street.  The thrumming beat of the drums will soothe his grief while he fills out Social Security disability paperwork for his post-traumatic (election) stress.

If I Wanted to Make America Prosperous Again

We have today a little historical perspective on the American economy and what ails it.  Dr. Robert Owens shows how the British colonies in North America moved away from the system of landed gentry that was transplanted here by the monarchy.  That original system that brought us agrarian slave economics was overcome by innovation, industrialization, and entrepreneurship.  His article then goes on to show how a return to those transformative attitudes and behaviors can save our nation from a future indentured to perpetual indebtedness and the soft slavery of socialism.

Today, America labors under self-imposed adversity. We are in the grip of an oppressive Progressive Movement that after 100 years of incremental advance is poised to transform America from what she has always been into what they want her to be. America has traditionally been a constitutionally limited Republic operating on democratic principles providing individual liberty and economic opportunity. The Progressives envision America as a centrally-planned highly regimented social democracy where the wealth is spread around from each according to their abilities to each according to their needs .

If I wanted to make America prosperous again I would take off the self-imposed shackles of a central government on steroids, stop imposing new regulations, and reduce taxes everywhere on everyone. Then I would stand back and watch our economy takes off like a rocket and we take our place beside our ancestors as free people with economic liberty and a will to succeed.

Read the whole article for a great look at the rise of American economic supremacy and the progressive movement’s efforts to destroy it.

Two weeks ago I shared a great video called If I wanted America to fail.  Go watch it if you haven’t already seen it.  It really does show how progressivism is strangling this country a little more each day.

Is Occupy Wall Street Anti-Semitic?

Watch this eye-opening video based on Melanie Phillips’ bestseller “The World Turned Upside Down“.  Produced by Declaration Entertainment and narrated by Bill Whittle, this short film shows the links between the radical Islam, the Communist, Nazi, and Democrat Parties and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

As a bonus, check out their video Debunking the Palestinian Lie based on the Sol Stern work “A Century Of Palestinian Rejectionism And Jew Hatred“.

Orwell, vegetarians, and the reality based world

George Orwell was one of the most influential futurist authors I was exposed to early in my reading career.  Despite his socialist leanings, a lot of his observations of human nature and societies were and still are spot on.  Read a few of my favorites and see what they tell you about the Occupy wackos.

On vegetarians and progressives…

“One sometimes gets the impression that the mere words ‘Socialism’ and ‘Communism’ draw towards them with magnetic force every fruit-juice drinker, nudist, sandal-wearer, sex-maniac, Quaker, ‘Nature Cure’ quack, pacifist, and feminist….The food-crank is by definition a person willing to cut himself off from human society in hopes of adding five years on to the life of his carcase; that is, a person out of touch with common humanity.”

Our troops aren’t villains…

“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf”

History matters…

“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”

Intellectual stupidity…

“There are some ideas so wrong that only a very intelligent person
could believe in them.”

Insanity…

“What can you do against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?”

His personal politics aside, some time spent reading some of his books or visiting his archive site would be time well spent.
