  • 1851  Publication of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin begins in abolitionist newspaper
  • 1884  William Tecumseh Sherman refuses Republican presidential nomination famously saying “I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected”
  • 1917  1st of 10 million men begin registering for the draft (WWI)
  • 1933  United States goes off of the gold standard; American currency no longer backed by gold and citizens prohibited from owning more than $100
