  • 1475  Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect and engineer Michelangelo is born (d. 1564)
  • 1820  James Monroe signs Missouri Compromise in attempt to prevent war by balancing number of slave-holding vs free states
  • 1836  After 13-day siege, 3000-man Mexican army attacks killing 187 defenders at the Alamo and capturing the fort; among the dead are Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and William Travis
  • 1857  Supreme Court issues “Dred Scott” decision affirming rights of slave owners; slaves not considered persons under the Constitution; Missouri Compromise declared unconstitutional
  • 1899  German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. receive patent for Aspirin
  • 1951  Ethel and Julius Rosenberg go on trial for espionage; convicted in April of selling nuclear secrets to the Soviets and sentenced to death
