Lee’s Resolution for Independence- 1776

Lee Resolution – proposed and seconded June 7, 1776

On May 15, 1776 the Virginia Convention unanimously approved a resolution requiring their delegates to the Second Continental Congress propose the colonies become “free and independent states”.  On June 7th, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia submited that resolution to the Second Continental Congress proposing that the colonies seek independence from Britain.  The three parts of the resolution were: a declaraction of independence, a call to seek and form foreign alliances, and a “plan for confederation”.  John Adams seconds Mr. Lee’s resolution.

Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.

That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation.
